Experience Allerton

While we may not be able to be at Allerton House and visiting the beautiful grounds this year, we can still experience it virtually.

Check out some of these great videos to see the gardens and grounds of this unique and spectacular place. Watch the Creek Cams to see some of the special visitors and relax a bit. And learn more about the history of the wonderful gift Robert Allerton gave to the University of Illinois and all of us.

Allerton was built as a private estate by artist and philanthropist Robert Henry Allerton in 1900. It was donated to the University of Illinois in 1946. The estate was the center of the 12,000 acre agricultural enterprise assembled during the late 1800s by Robert's father, Samuel.

Robert's passion was art. He was educated in Europe and he traveled extensively and collected art. He believed in the artistic power of nature and believed in the stewardship of the land and its natural elements. He spent decades shaping the Illinois farmland to create ever-evolving landscapes that captured the natural beauty and formal gardens and he created outdoor galleries for sculptures.
